The 1st FW was stationed at Dhahran, on 8 Aug 1990, as the first American unit to deploy to Saudi Arabia for what became known as Operation Desert Shield .
|

Capt Steve "Tater" Tate, 71st FS, scored the 1st Wing's only kill of the war by downing an Iraqi Mirage F-1 on the first night of Operation Desert Storm with an AIM-7 Sparrow semi-active missile.

F-15 refueling at sunset. During Operation Desert Storm, 1st FW F-15Cs maintained air-superiority CAPs 24/7 over the skies of southern and central Iraq. After just three days, the Iraqi Air Force decided it had had enough of combat with the undefeated F-15Cs, and decided to flee to Iran rather than to fight. To date, the F-15's combat record stands at 105 to Zero, acheiving 33 of those kills during Desert Storm.

27 FS jet loaded and ready for the next mission at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in one of the heavily reinforced "flow-throughs" (Note the Patriot batteries in the background).
There were only enough flow-throughs for about 1/3 of the Wing's aircraft, leaving many aircraft vulnerable to scud attack (one F-15 was lightly damaged by a Scud attack). |
