The EXCEL  tabulation  of losses  identifies  271  aircraft   of the 1st Fighter Group

lost in World War  II

and list specifics of their loss as derived from records in the National Archives.

~~~~~~~
Each line item is a summary compilation from
Ÿ        MISSION REPORTS
Prepared by the Intelligence Officers of the 1st Fighter Group
and its three Squadrons  (27th , 71st , &  94th)
Ÿ        MISSING AIR CREW REPORTS (MACR’s)
Also prepared by the Intelligence Officers after a loss is reported in mission debriefings
Ÿ        WWII  MEMORIAL  REGISTRY
Individual memorial pages available via the Internet at  http://www.wwiimemorial.com
Some by the War Department, some by the American Battle Monuments Commission,
and some by relatives & friends of the lost individual.
Ÿ        NATIONAL ARCHIVES ONLINE DATA BASES
The National Archives at   http://www.archives.gov has searchable databases for POW’s
and the casualty listings of those determined by the War Department to have died .  The
deceased files are listed by County of residence upon enlistment.  The POW files
identify the internment  dates and sites as well as release dates.
The tabulation is in alphabetical order of the last names of the pilots lost.  The following describes the columns of data.
SOURCE
The National Archives issues MACR copies via microfiche -- a 4”x6” film containing images of the 8.5”x 11” pages of the original documents .  A ‘fiche’ usually contains up to four unrelated MACR’s -- except by their numerical cataloging number.  In buying  a particular MACR, you receive copies of up to three numerically adjacent, but unrelated MACR’s.  The fiche may contain images of over fifty pages of material in greatly reduced scale which must be read on suitable microfilm projectors and printed to full scale thereon.
In this tabulation, if the SOURCE was a MACR, the fiche# is listed.  To supplement the limited MACR listings,  other losses were identified through review of the 1st Fighter Group history by John Mullins—“An Escort of P-38’s”.  The SOURCE for such is listed as ‘MULLINS’.  Additional losses were identified through research of the National Archives online databases.  The SOURCE for such is listed as NARA.
MACR #
The 14,000+ MACR’s are numbered generally in their chronological order of occurrence. We have been fortunate to have a full index to the MACR’s which was provided by Steve Blake,  officer and editor of the P-38 National Association.  The index provides the date of the loss and the type of A/C along with USAAF group # and general geographical area of loss which allows close correlation with mission report data for definitive ordering from the Archives.  A MACR may include up to a dozen or so pages depending upon the incident complexity.
DATE
The date of the loss is given in a six digit form for convenient computer sorting.  The first two digits represent the year, the next two--the month and the last two --  the day of the month. --- e.g.  440610
A/C
The lost aircraft model.
SQ
The Squadron of the pilot.
NAME
Full name of the lost pilot
LOCATION
A short description ( i.e. the country) of the crash or last sighting.  The text of the MACR often estimates the Lat/Lon coordinates or provides a map sketch, but are often very general and possibly in error.
P38 S/N
The serial # of the aircraft is given in the MACR text and is a critical data item for crash site searches.  The MACR text identifies the serial #’s of the engines and of the machine guns and cannon.
PILOT S/N
The MACR text identifies the rank and serial # of the pilot and often gives the name & address of the nearest of kin -- all vital data in conducting searches for the pilot’s remains and/or family.
STAT
The status of the lost pilot as determined through searches of WWII Memorial entries and various archival data bases , including POW listings and USAAF casualty listings by hometown counties of the US.
