Lt. Virgil Radcliffe and his P-38, taken before March 8th, 1943, since it lacks a victory marking on the nose. Virgil came into the 1st at the beginning of January, 1943, and I assume he did not get his own plane to name for a bit after that, so the exact date here is sometime between those dates. "Rip" refers to a major league baseball player of the time named Rip Radcliffe. Virgil was given the nick name by his fellow pilots.
