The Reunion seen through younger eyes

The 1st Fighter Wing representatives had a fantastic time at the 1st Fighter Group reunion! What a great spot to hold a reunion...a gorgeous hotel complete with two bars, an aviator's wall of fame, and a brewery 1 block away. The camaraderie was incredible, the hospitality was extraordinary. A more amiable and generous group of men (and families) I have never met. What a thrill it was to share a drink, talk of flying and see the twinkle in your eyes, especially when we got up next to the P-38. Through the war stories I could imagine being there with you guys, and felt a bit like the junior wingman in the squadron clamoring to get a bit more of the collective wisdom before launching on the first combat mission. It was amazing to hear first-hand what you all went through...the good times, the bad times, the excitement, the miracles, the mistakes, the losses and the victories. It gave me a heck of an an appreciation for the challenges and sacrifices that you endured on behalf of your country. Like I said, we don't have it nearly as bad as you had it back then...thanks to all that you men accomplished. This is the second time you all have earned my deepest respect and thanks.
We were thrilled to be able to show off our jets, and even happier to get the chance to perform a missing-man flyby for the Group. I am especially thankful to several folks who gave or loaned me photos, documents and books which will greatly aid in preserving the Group's rich history for future generations (not to mention making our barren walls in the squadron look much better). The trip was a huge success for the men and women of the 1st Fighter Wing. Thank you for the warm welcome we received by all of the association members, and for making it possible for us to attend through your tireless efforts and generosity!
